New publication: The Art of Linking „LINKs“ / Social Composing
Muntendorfs article „Social Composing“ is published in the magazine « LINKs » (The Art of Linking).
The magazine is an annual transdisciplinary review. As a meeting place between hard sciences and humanities, LINKs will link scientific and artistic news (and reflexions) and also address the fields of philosophical thought (and also political) questioning the technical domains, the innovation academics as well as the societies’ evolution.
LINKs will probe everything that can connect in thinking into a complex, dynamic and reflexive approach, and propose a new aesthetic. LINKs will assert the need for a non-linear vision and a thought of Complexity to consider and understand the world’s phenomena and contemporary political, social and technical issues. At the same time demanding and accessible, LINKS will offer an idea of epistemological reflection based on an in-depth knowledge of techniques and artistic and scientific innovations. Each contributor, coming from very diverse backgrounds, would thus bring his point of view. more info

28.09.19 Songs of Rebellion | BAM! Festival Berlin
27.09.19 Songs of Rebellion | premiere | Ensemble Garage & Opera Lab | BAM! Festival Berlin
For SONGS OF REBELLION, Brigitta Muntendorf (composer) and Michael Höppner (director) create a „Community of Practice“ consisting of various ensembles and artists, expose themselves to the individual and collective power of the song and stage its ambivalent relationship to diverse forms of uprising. The contradictory, resisting and affirmative, transitory or even lost existence of the protest song asa stimulant, cult, myth, gesture of uproar or party music makes this special song type appear as immortal as it is infinitely vulnerable. SONGS OF REBELLION unfolds an experiential space of musical, theatrical and medial linksof resistance and dedication, in which escapismand agitation, art and politics, contemporarymusic and pop, contemplation and action can always be a fanfare as well as a lullaby of rebellion.
Michael Höppner (direction), Jule Saworski (costumes), Warped Type (Live-Video), Maximilan Estudies (sound direction), Malgorzata Walentynowicz & Till Künkler (Ensemble Garage), Evdoxia Filippou & Louis Bona (Opera Lab), Carola Schaal.
“When the light turns off, the conductor stands in the orchestra pit and looks into the audience. Are we the action? Behind the light, the globe becomes faintly visible – and the music briefly recalls Kubrick‘s „2001“. Brigitta Muntendorf has composed this fascinating music, which unfolds from the nothingness of the sounds an ever more lively and intensive sound world.” (Bernd Feuchtner)

Bright no more is performed by Frauke Albert in frame of the concert concept „Serie Rose“ – unlike in other art forms, it is not often seen that newly written music focuses on eroticism. But it is present at this concert where three works are presented. Public Privacy#6 BoxMachine is the title of Muntendorf’s work, and in a way it is characteristic for the entire project: the private in the open, the open drawn into the private, the rendering, the movie, the soundtrack and the live music. All of it represents clashes of intimacy and publicity. And in all parts with the voice and eroticism in focus. Monika Pasiecznik is the curator of the project.

24.05.2019 SKY AND HEAVEN | Muntendorf, Electric Indigo & Ensemble Garage |Kunstfestspiele Herrenhausen (sold out)
SKY and HEAVEN, a concert curated by Brigitta Muntendorf, establishes a relationship between the transmedial power of music and the painted trompe-l’œils of the gallery until the boundaries between reality and illusion become blurred. SKY and HEAVEN mixes techno-club aesthetics, avant-garde music, video and performance into a new concert format. Muntendorf’s combination of instruments, electronics, moving images and performance also extends to the club ambiance and DJs, who develop new situations for a dancing body to experiment with sound.
Together with highly regarded crossover artists, the Cologne-based Ensemble Garage presents a concert lasting several hours in which the video works of Nika Radić add a digital dimension to the historical ballroom’s wall paintings. The grande dame of techno, Electric Indigo, collaborates with Brigitta Muntendorf on syntheses and anti-syntheses of instrumental and electronic sound worlds. SKY and HEAVEN radiates at the boundary between music and performance, creating an echo chamber in which open and autonomous formations – as in Sabine Akiko Ahrendt’s sample performance ‘Dancemat‘ and Michael Beil’s ‘Caravan‘session – exist side by side.

Essay for the Agenda 2018/19 of the Klangforum Wien about working in the field of Contemporary Music & Digital Conditions.
„The digital revolution is currently showing us to what extent chaotic, non-linear and reciprocal processes are able to evoke creativity, productivity, communality, resonance and vitality. The extent of our ability to establish some lively, collective and dialogical formats will in the end determine whether in future we will operate within an energetic and contemporary musical culture – or in a museum which has become irrelevant for our present day.“

„My voice, your voice, our voice“ represents the output of an exceptionally creative and interactive workshop, held over several phases, employing diverse media to reflect power, tonal expression and sound gestures. The compositional process is meant to build bridges to foreign vocal traditions and cultures. The project facilitated the artistic and intellectual interaction between the musicians, who sometimes participants in each other’s work, and at other times were influenced by each other’s artistic personas, which was in turn reflected in their output, and infused with their own impressions of the surrounding environment, their artistic foundation and life experiences; an expression of their humanity with all it’s impulses, thoughts and emotions.
The European Egyptian Contemporary Music Society brought together a number of prominent artists from Egypt and Germany for this project. Vocalized for voice (Kamilya Jubran), violin, cello and electronics will be premiered in frame of this project – a piece coming up in the middle of a revolution, that explores the power of impersonality.

The Staatsphilharmonie Rheinland-Pfalz, conducted by Hubert Soudant, presents CRACK for large orchestra at the BASF Feierabendhaus in Ludwigshafen. It’s the first concert of the BASF composer portrait of Brigitta Muntendorf.
What kind of a hero is in „Heldenleben“ by Strauss? Who is actually heroic nowadays and in what context can heroes survive? The more such questions are raised, the clearer it becomes that heroes are merely a product of the media, and we can choose to believe them or not. But heroes are created not only at light-speed, but also randomly, uncontrolled. Constant remains only an urge, a motor, a need for heroicism. The orchestra is the largest and leading symphony orchestra of the German state of Rhineland-Palatinate and includes 88 musicians from 16 nations.

CITY DANCE COLOGNE: From sunrise until sunset we have made the city center of Cologne move. We? Stephanie Thiersch (Choreographer, Brigitta Muntendorf, composer, Bettina Buck, visual artist).
Together with more than 500 participating dancers, singers, musicians, artists and amateurs, this 12-hour day full of encounters and perfomances came to a wonderful end at the stations forecourt, facing the cathedral. With an attendant crowd of round about 5000 people, the City Dance transformed this ill-famed site into a giant dance floor and thus our celebrating city has been „lifted from the gravity of everyday life for a moment“. (Christian Bos, KStA) We want to thank all of our City Dancers, helping hands and supporters, who made this day possible and shaped it with us. Already we are excited to see which marks the City Dance will leave in Cologne.

Wah-Wah is a full-evening performance for dance and music in collaboration with the choreographer Anna Konjetzky about shared spaces based on democratic and non dissipative systems and the refusal of any hierarchic structure. Wah-Wah is an obersvation space that offers the possibility to raise communities within of a never ending, infecting and euphoric movement. The music forms an independent counterpoint by taking the physical power of the dancers and transforming it into a rich spectrum of vectors forces and associations. Building this parallel world a lot of interviews with the dancers that were token in-between the five months of rehearsing – recordings in states of exhaustion and high-energy after athletic performances, while a process of developing and searching. These interviews are focused on the personalities, used in original form or transformed into music as a source for energy, as doping material.

„NOOM is an amateur ensemble, recently set up by Insomnio. On the last afternoon of the festival they play a free concert in the Festival Hub. IN SYNC was written by one of the young heroines of the German contemporary music scene, Brigitta Muntendorf, who entered the public eye with music-theatrical works and an extensive use of mixed media. IN SYNC will give NOOM ample opportunity to show its mettle; the work requires an exact synchronization of the physical movements of the musicians. As the strings bow from left to right they should in sync with the percussionists on either side and with the slide of the trombonist as it moves backwards and forwards. Meanwhile, the bassoonists step sideways and the trumpet players mute their instruments with choreographed hand movements. Regardless of the visual synchronisation the resulting sound is blurred as the composition explores the device, “the same, but different”

„This program, in its explorations of movement, bodies, sampling, and performance relationships, critiques and reflects on social and political structures and their musical implications. David Alan Broome’s critiques of capitalism in “Drink,” Brigitta Muntendorf’s critiques of hierarchies in “Yes, Master,” and Jennifer Walshe’s critiques of classical instrumental performance in “Wash Me Whiter Than Snow” will all contribute to a politically potent and musically engaging performance.“ (mocreb)

Some call it Post-Internet Art. Others the New Aesthetic. Whatever the name, there’s no doubt that the internet has scrambled the way we think, see and listen. Yet if art has placed this new paradigm at its heart, we are only now beginning to distil what it means for musical composition. READ MORE

31.12.14 – 11.01.2015 JUMP FOR COMPASSION

04.11.2014 ISLANDS OF LIGHT
Eine audiovisuelle Performance über Wort und Klang
ISLANDS OF LIGHT erlebt am 4.
